Can You Use Any Candle With a Candle Warmer Lamp?

The short answer is that most jar candles will work under a candle warmer lamp. The longer answer is that some work better than others, and a candle made for the job makes life simpler.

What to check before you use a candle under a lamp

  • It fits. The candle needs to sit comfortably under the bulb. Very tall or very wide candles may not fit, or may not melt evenly.
  • It is in a sturdy, heat safe container. Glass jars and tins made for candles are ideal. Do not use anything cracked or chipped.
  • It is not lit. Never burn a candle while it is under a warmer lamp that is switched on. Flame plus lamp can cause overheating.
  • It heats from above. Lamps warm from the top. Warmer plates heat from underneath and suit different candles, so check which you have.

So why buy a wickless candle?

If an ordinary candle works, why choose one without a wick?

  • It is made for the lamp. The jar size and the wax are chosen to melt well under a bulb, not to burn well around a wick.
  • There is no temptation to light it. If you have chosen a lamp because you would rather not have a flame at home, a candle with no wick keeps it that way, whoever is in the house.
  • There is no wick in the way. As a wicked candle melts and resets under a lamp, the wick can end up buried or bent, which makes it awkward if you ever want to burn it normally.
  • It looks neater. A smooth, unbroken top that melts and resets cleanly every time.

A simple way to start

Our wickless candles are hand poured in soy wax, around 205g, in a clear glass jar sized for candle warmer lamps. Choose a scent from The Seasonal Collection, or if you do not have a lamp yet, our lamp and candle gift set comes with both.
